Eagle Farm Summary
Eagle Farm is an industrial suburb located in the eastern part of Brisbane, Queensland, and has a rich history tied to both aviation and early colonial settlement. Historically, it was the site of a women’s prison and factory, part of the Moreton Bay penal settlement from 1829 to 1839. The area was used to isolate female convicts to prevent fraternization with male convicts and military personnel. Over the years, Eagle Farm transitioned through various uses, including farming and cattle raising before becoming an aviation hub.
In 1922, the area became home to the Eagle Farm Airport, which served as Brisbane’s main airport until 1988. During World War II, the airport played a critical role as a U.S. military base, housing a variety of squadrons and supporting the Pacific campaign. Post-war, it became Brisbane’s key airport until operations moved to the current Brisbane Airport.
Today, Eagle Farm retains several heritage-listed sites, including the remnants of the women’s prison and World War II infrastructure like the Allison Engine Testing Stands. Its modern role includes being part of Brisbane’s TradeCoast industrial precinct, playing a key role in commerce and industry.
